Olive is a 15 month old standard poodle that came to our clinic in July 2007. She was not eating, vomiting, and lethargic. Upon examination her abdomen was tender. We took abdominal x-rays and found that 2 large stones were lodged in her stomach. We decided to try to remove the stones endoscopically using a procedure called gastroscopy. Olive was put under anesthesia and an endoscope was inserted into her stomach through her pharynx. The camera at the end of the endoscope allowed us to view the entire stomach and to pinpoint where the stones were. We then inserted a basket-forceps into the endoscope and carefully surrounded the stones with the basket and pulled the stones one by one into the esophagus for removal. This was challenging since the stones were deeply embedded in the stomach folds. We were successful at removing both stones and Olive did not require gastric (stomach) surgery. By the next day, Olive was back to her normal, playful self!
