Animal Spotlight - Cody
|

Cody is a mini-Australian Shepherd puppy that was seriously injured by a hit-and-run accident on August 20, 2009. He was taken by a good Samaritan to Pet Emergency Clinic in Thousand Oaks that night. The good sam was able to locate Cody's "owner" and found that he already had a difficult time even before the accident. He was flown to California from a breeder in the Midwest just a few days earlier. The family who had bought him decided that they didn't want to keep him and gave him to someone else. The first night he was with his second family he escaped from the yard and was hit.
He had both hips and one elbow dislocated, a fractured scapula, and a fractured vertebra in addition to fluid build up in his lungs. The PEC did an excellent job stabilizing him and he was brought to our clinic the following day. Dr. Frier assessed Cody's condition and decided that once he was strong enough Cody would be an excellent candidate for a bilateral femoral head ostectomy (FHO), which is the removal of the heads of the femurs. The family who had him for only 1 day before this decided that they were unable to keep him and give him the after care that would be required so they contacted a rescue organization called Tiny Loving Canines, Inc. (T.L.C.). TLC took over ownership of Cody and they contacted us about performing the FHO. Dr. Frier agreed to donate 50% of the surgery cost and 100% of the post-operative hydrotherapy sessions. Cody's FHO was performed on August 31, 2009. He has done very well and is starting to use his rear legs again. You can follow his progress on TLC's blog that is dedicated especially to him:
